Lignocelluloses are reliable raw materials available for large-scale fuel ethanol production in China. In the research on a pilot plant, lignocelluloses were steam exploded, cellulose and hemicellulose were hydrolyzed with cellulose enzyme synthesized by Trichoderma reesei strain, and the resulted pentoses and hexoses were fermented to ethanol by Pichia stipitis. This pilot plant handled lignocelluloses 5 t per day to produce ethanol 0.8 t per day, with a hydrolysis yield of 71.3%, a sugar utilization ratio of 87.2 %, and an ethanol yield of 0.43 g/g consumed sugars. The cost of ethanol production was estimated to be 4000 yuan/t, or 500 USD/t.In order to tramsform this technology into productivity, further research works are required in the following respects of key technologies; 1) Pretreatment techniques of low energy consumption and low material loss, especially steam explosion and chemical-added explosion; 2) Recombinant strains for high-efficiency cellulose enzyme synthesis, systematic control of enzyme production and enzymatic hydrolysis; 3) Pentose fermentation regulation and genetic modification of yeast strains; 4) Assembling and coordination of the available key technologies for full-scale utilization of lignocelluloses; 5) Research on woody plants as energy resources.

Eucalyptus is not only one of the most important high-yield commercial forest species, but also an excellent species of energy resources.Eucalyptus plantation is the fastest growing with the largest biomass among man-made forests of the world because of its highly effective photosynthesis mechanism. Thanks to the good mechanism of water-adaptability, eucalyptus is strongly drought-resistant.Eucalyptus can also reduce nutrient distribution of per specific leaf area to adapt to adverse environment.Eucalyptus is widely adaptable to the poor and lean lands because it is a typical mycorrhizal tree.In Australia, it is easy to find many special varieties including those possessing the characteritics of good salinity-tolerance, waterlogging-tolerance, cold-tolerance or wind-resistance because eucalyptus trees are widely distributed in various types of climatical and geological environments in Australia. The advantages of eucalyptus as bioenergy resource are; easy management and low maintaining costs; easy propagation; the large amount of buds under the bark lead to strong germinating ability; resistance to disease and pest because of its abundant essential oils. The ways for utilizing eucalyptus as bioenergy resource are: transfer of essential oils to diesel oil; The whole tree is a good fuel material because of the high caloric value; Carbonization as charcoal and activated carbon; Liquefied fuels. It is estimated that currently there are 1.8 millions hm2 eucalypt plantation in China, which continue to increase at the rate up to 10 % per year. Thanks to the quick development of the plantation, the techniques for production and utilization of eucalyptus have been well developed. This paper introduced also the present status of eucalyptus bioenergy production in Australia.Similarly, the time is ripe to produce bioenergy through eucalyptus in China.

Containing more than 70% oil in seeds, hickory is one of the highest oil-bearing plants in the world. The strategy of selection of hickory (Carya cathayensis Sarg.) was determined by analyzing the genetic diversity.143 new varieties were selected initially by using conventional selection method combined with molecular marker.50 fine varieties were reselected including three kinds of varieties from Lin'an, Anji and Chun'an areas, which have high and stable yield, early maturation and large fruit.Comparative analysis was conducted by measuring the economic indexes of fresh fruit weight, dry fruit weight, full seed yield, full kernel yield, total lipid and total protein. The results showed that hickory: 1) possessed further potentiality of variety selection, the variation coefficient of fresh fruit weight was the highest among six economic indexes, while that of total lipid was the lowest; 2) the economic indexes among three areas were not consistent, but area distribution showed significant differences among full seed yields and full kernel yields.

Two cDNA fragments of fad2 gene were cloned using degenerate primers from Caragana intermedia which is an important bio-erergy plant. The DNA sequence analysis indicated that the fragments contain 452 and 480 bp, and share 88 % of homology with Glycine max Gm fad2-2a in Genbank. Both of the gene fragments were registered in Genbank (AY957393, AY957394).The fragment AY957394(452 bp) was digested with the enzyme BamHI and SacI, and ligated to the corresponding sites of the pBI121 in the antisense orientation. The pBI121 fad2 vector was introduced into Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LB4404 by electroporation and transformed to leaf of tobacco via A.tumefaciens system.Plantlets were regenerated in vitro by resistance selection on medium containing Ampicillin and Knamycin.PCR amplification results with primer designed according to the fad2 gene fragment and NPT II gene in pBI121 demonstrated that antisense fad2 was integrated into tobacco genomes. The preliminary analysis showed that compared with the untransgenic tobacco plants, the fatty acid content of transgenic tobacco seeds was at the same level, but the lenoleic acid content was 10.3 % less.More research is still doing on the transgenic tobacco plants T1 to know more about fad2 function. The results generated in this experiment will be used to study how to improve the fatty acid composition in oil plants with gene technique according to the biodiesel production.
